Caerfai Farm Campsite
Spacious clifftop camping on an organic farm just outside St Davids, where fields slope down to a stunning view of St Bride's Bay and a near-private beach below
Tucked just outside St Davids, Britain's smallest city, Caerfai Farm has several claims to fame including a lovely farm shop and simple, spacious fields, but truly the star of the show is the stunning view of St Bride's Bay that can be spied from almost any part of the site. The site is spread across two gently sloping camping areas; the large central field bustles with children flying kites and playing football whilst the bay stretches out behind them. Between the site and the cliff edge the coastal path winds down to Caerfai Bay, a beautiful small beach bordered by the cliffs to the right. Its seclusion makes it practically the site's private beach, with striking blue waters that demand a paddle. St Davids is a short walk away and Whitesands Bay can be reached in a few hours via the Pembrokeshire Coastal Path as it meanders around the Welsh shore. Keep an eye on the water too; big pods of dolphins are spotted off this stretch of coast, sometimes a few hundred strong.
One of Caerfai Farm's highlights is the farm shop, but get there early as a queue will be out the door at breakfast for the fresh pastries. Alongside the usual supplies and sundries the shop sells cheese made from milk produced on the farm, freshly baked bread and organic meats. If canvas isn't quite enough, the farm also hires out yurts, which are worth enquiring about given the trade-off from the beautiful views is a lack of shelter from the inclement Welsh weather.
As well as being based on an organic farm the site is admirably eco friendly, with a solar powered toilet block; the only downside is the gentle thrum of a wind turbine that turns until 11pm, though personally we found it quite soothing. The facilities are honest and a touch dated in places, but they are kept spotless, and for a pitch this close to one of Pembrokeshire's best bays that is a trade we would make every time.
