Newgale Camp Site
A booking-free beach camp metres from the surf on Pembrokeshire's Newgale coast, where you camp all but on the sand and fall asleep to the sea crashing
Newgale Campsite nestles just metres from the long flat expanse of Newgale beach on the Pembrokeshire coast. Camping here since 1935, the site lies halfway between Haverfordwest and St Davids and is a water sports enthusiast's dream, bordering the beach with only a narrow road separating you from the surf. Newgale beach has a blue flag for cleanliness and a lifeguard patrols during the school holidays. At night you can hear the sea crashing on the beach, which is only occasionally marred by a passing car as the A487 literally skirts the edge of the site as it bends around the coast.
The campsite is protected by a long shingle bank, but the price of the stunning location is exposure to strong winds that whip across the beach. Newgale doesn't accept bookings, so if the weather is behaving a last minute dash to the coast can be rewarded with this stunning site. It is largely flat but gently slopes upwards towards the far corner; this area offers the best views at the cost of a slightly less even pitch. When we visited the site was busy in a good natured way with a nice sense of community between the campers, and that atmosphere clearly still holds, with families coming back year after year. The site is served by well kept toilets and hot showers, and the old food wagon has now grown up into the Landsker Line Bar and Takeaway, which pours real ales and coffee, does the food and puts on live music some evenings.
If you're taken by the location but would appreciate something a little more intimate, another campsite is perched on the hill just above Newgale with an even more stunning view, but at the cost of a 10 minute walk down to the beach. For a decent pint further afield, head to the Harbour Inn in nearby Solva.
