Mourne Camping

Owner-run mountain-and-sea site at the foot of the Mournes, where grazing sheep share the hedgerows and Frank comes by to take your money.

Bloody Bridge sits a few miles south of Newcastle on the Ballagh Road, tucked right against the foot of the Mourne Mountains with open sea views over the other shoulder. The Bloody Bridge River walking trail starts here, giving you immediate access to the Mournes without driving anywhere, while Newcastle's sandy beaches are a short scenic walk along the coast path.

Frank runs the place himself, which means a genuine welcome, friendly dogs, and the kind of unhurried pace you won't find on a managed booking platform. Pitches are a mix of tent, caravan, motorhome and cabin, sheltered by thick hedgerows that cut the Atlantic wind. Facilities are honest rather than polished: hot showers, clean toilets, and reportedly the best drinking water on the Mournes circuit. No kitchen, no phone charging, no dishwashing sinks. Come prepared for proper camping.

The setting does all the work. Waking up to mountain silhouettes on one side and sea on the other, with grazing sheep among the yellow gorse, is the reason people return. Bus stop at the gate with half-hourly service during peak season if you'd rather leave the car behind.

Before you book

  • No signage at the entrance, if in doubt, call Frank directly and he'll direct you to a pitch.
  • No kitchen facilities, phone charging or dish-washing on site: pack accordingly.
A genuinely owner-led site in one of Northern Ireland's best landscapes, where the mountain access and sea views earn their keep and Frank earns his reputation through real presence rather than polish.
