Graig Wen

A family-run Snowdonia site above the Mawddach Estuary, where the panorama pitches look out over saltmarsh, mountain and open water all at once.

Graig Wen sits on a hillside between Barmouth and Dolgellau, inside Snowdonia National Park, with the Mawddach Estuary spread below. The views here are the main event: saltmarsh, open water, and the mountains of Eryri stacked behind. On the panorama pitches, that view is unobstructed from your pitch. A steep track leads directly down to the Mawddach Trail, which runs along the estuary to Barmouth (roughly 3.7 miles, flat once you reach it) or the other direction towards Dolgellau.

The mix of accommodation is genuine: touring pitches with electric hookups alongside proper tent pitches, and a small collection of yurts and shepherd's huts for those who want walls. The shepherd's huts in particular have won repeat visitors, and families return to the same structures year after year. Owner Sarah and the team keep the facilities clean and well-maintained, and the site app is a thoughtful touch for finding local events and walks.

Dogs are welcome throughout. Cafes, pubs, and restaurants are a ten-minute drive. The Fairbourne Steam Railway and Cader Idris climbs are both nearby for families who want more than estuary cycling. The site is open beyond summer, with some guests returning in winter for the stillness and the off-season Mawddach light.

Before you book

  • The approach involves a steep drive to reach the site.
  • The Mawddach Trail connection is via a steep track down from the site.
One of Snowdonia's most honest all-rounder sites: the estuary views do the heavy lifting, the owners keep everything in order, and the trail access makes it easy to fill a week without moving the car.
