Dôl Einion

A pick-your-own-pitch field at the foot of Cader Idris, with a stile in the corner that leads straight onto the Minffordd Path.

Dôl Einion sits in the Tal-y-llyn valley inside southern Snowdonia National Park, enclosed by mountains on all sides and bordered by a river that feeds Tal-y-llyn lake. The Minffordd Path, one of the classic ascents of Cader Idris, starts from a stile at the edge of the camping field, which means you can be on the mountain before the rest of the site has put the kettle on.

The site is a flat, well-kept field. No frills, no assigned pitches: you choose your spot and the owner comes round to take payment. Grass and hardcore hardstanding pitches share the space, with electric hook-ups available, so tourers and tenters coexist without trouble. Showers and loos are old-school but cleaned to a high standard; bring a handful of 20p coins for the showers. Fires and BBQs are allowed when kept off the ground.

The Minffordd Hotel is a short walk from the gate, and the Ty'n-y-Cornel Hotel sits at the southern end of Tal-y-llyn lake. The Dôl Idris country park is right next door. Beaches at Tywyn and Aberdovey are reachable for a day out, and the Corris and Tal-y-llyn narrow-gauge steam railways are close. The site sits on the Mach Loop low-flying route: fighter jets occasionally bank overhead, which either thrills you or you'd rather not know about.

Before you book

  • Showers are coin-operated (20p coins required); no cashless payment on site.
  • No advance booking: arrive and pay the owner directly.
A no-nonsense mountain-base camp that earns its place through location alone. If Cader Idris is why you're coming to southern Snowdonia, this field is the right answer.

Why it made the cut

  • Direct trail access to the Minffordd Path from the camping field
  • Snowdonia National Park setting with 360-degree mountain views
  • Family-run, pick-your-own-pitch simplicity at a fair price
  • Mixed pitch types work well: tents and tourers share the same honest field
