Bwch-Yn-Uchaf Campsite
A river-edged valley site in Snowdonia, with a steam railway next door and no light pollution to speak of.
Bwch-yn-Uchaf sits at the foot of the Aran and Arenig mountains in Snowdonia National Park, with the River Twrch running alongside the full length of the site. The Bala Lake Railway station is literally next door, so you fall asleep to mountain silence and wake to the occasional chuff of a steam engine heading down the valley to Bala town. Llyn Tegid, Wales's largest natural lake, is a mile away.
The site is run by Gareth and Bethan, and their care shows. About ten gravel hardstanding pitches sit on the upper terrace with big mountain views; the grass tent areas are on the lower ground closer to the river, where kids paddle and the star-watching begins properly after dark. No meaningful light pollution means the Milky Way comes out without any effort. There is a small shop at reception, clean showers and toilets, laundry, and a washing-up area. The Eagle, a community pub in Llanuwchllyn village, is a short walk around the corner and serves food.
For families this is close to ideal: a play area on site, bikes ridden round without worry, paddling in the river, and the steam railway trips to Bala as a ready-made day out. Paddleboarding and white-water rafting are both accessible from Bala town. Walks fan out from the site into the national park. It is the kind of place that earns return visits.
