Chiltern Retreat

A 3, 700-acre Chiltern farm with woodland pitches, a fire grate on every pitch, and the kind of spacious layouts that make neighbours feel theoretical.

Chiltern Retreat sits on a working farm of over 3, 700 acres in the Chiltern Hills, offering tent campers a choice between open meadow pitches, field pitches, and woodland plots tucked under a canopy thick enough to hear owls after dark. Every pitch comes with a fire grate and complimentary firewood, not a gesture but a genuine operating principle. Deer have been spotted on walks from the site; red kites circle overhead.

The facilities punch above the site's pastoral feel: clean shower and toilet blocks, a washing-up area, a shop, phone charging points, and generous freezer storage for longer stays. Pitches are large enough that a group can spread properly, and the woodland plots offer real privacy without feeling isolated. The staff, Nickie in particular, by several accounts, run the place with visible care.

It is a tent-only site with no electric hookups, which keeps the field quieter and the crowd self-selecting. The Chiltern Way passes nearby, and the River Thames is within reach for afternoon walks. A pub is accessible on foot for anyone who doesn't fancy cooking.

Before you book

  • Farm machinery on the neighbouring working farm can run through the day and intermittently at night, light sleepers may want earplugs.
  • No electric hookups: tent-only site.
One of the South East's most credible woodland camping options: a working farm that takes the campfire seriously, keeps the facilities honest, and gives you enough space to forget other campers exist.
