Fontmill Farm

A 140-acre East Sussex farm where the Cuckoo Trail runs at the bottom of the field and hosts Steve and Nicola make every stay feel personally looked after.

Fontmill Farm sits in the low Weald between Eastbourne and Tunbridge Wells, a working farm that has kept its soul intact. The 20-acre meadow field is pitched generously: spaces are large enough that a full site rarely feels crowded. Look uphill and there are sheep in the paddocks; look down and it is open hay pasture. The shepherd's hut, for those who want a roof, commands uninterrupted views of the surrounding landscape.

The real draw for many is immediate: the Cuckoo Trail, a 14-mile paved former railway track, runs along the bottom of the farm. Cyclists can be on it within minutes of arriving. The Gun at Chiddingly is a 10-minute drive or half-hour walk, and the Gun Brewery at the same village is the same distance on foot. The Runt in Tun at Heathfield sits just off the Trail itself. For families with younger children, Knockhatch Adventure Park, Drusillas, and The Observatory Science Centre are all nearby, with Birling Gap and Eastbourne a few miles south.

Steve and Nicola run the place with the kind of attentiveness that shows up in the details: warm showers, clean toilets, washing-up stations, drinking water, a kitchen area with phone charging, and a small shop selling locally sourced bacon and eggs. They are known for offering route advice on request, which is useful because the walking and cycling options from the gate are genuinely good. This is a no-dogs site: livestock are present throughout the farm.
