Camping in Nature at Vallis Veg

Organic farm camping one field from Frome, run by a climate activist with barn owls for neighbours and compost loos for humility.

Vallis Veg sits on the fringe of Frome, close enough to walk into town for supper but far enough that barn owls quarter the adjacent field after dark. Cordelia runs it as a working organic farm and holds the camping to the same values: numbered pitches spread through young trees, rough ground left rough, a climate charge on your bill that actually goes somewhere.

Facilities are genuinely basic: compost toilets, communal fire pits (wheelbarrows provided to haul kit to your pitch), no hot water, no showers. What's here instead is quiet, real wildlife, and the particular satisfaction of a site that knows exactly what it is and doesn't apologise. The MacMillan Way runs nearby for walking to Nunney Castle; a 7km round-trip footpath reaches Mells and The Talbot Inn. Frome itself, with its independent market on the first Sunday of every month and its July festival, is ten minutes on foot.

Pitches are tent-only. No dogs. Quiet hours from 10pm, though Cordelia encourages sitting out with a fire well into the night so long as the volume goes down.

Before you book

  • No showers or hot water on site, facilities are compost toilets and fire pits only.
  • No dogs permitted.
One of the most honestly-run small farm sites in Somerset: basic where it means it, principled where it counts, and with enough going on in Frome and the surrounding countryside to fill a long weekend.

Why it made the cut

  • Working organic farm with a genuine owner story and clear values, not a field with a sign on it
  • Tent-only, spread-out pitches through young trees with real wildlife including barn owls and kestrels
  • Walking distance to Frome's cultural scene and a 7km round trip to Mells village and a good pub
  • Communal fire pits and a relaxed late-fire policy make evenings feel unhurried
