Hadspen Glamping

Three private safari lodges in the Somerset countryside, each with its own wood-fired hot tub and solar power, run by an owner who still greets you on arrival.

Hadspen Glamping is three lodges, not thirty. That's the thing to know first. Lucy runs a tight, considered operation outside Castle Cary, where the Mendip Hills fill the view and the neighbouring field has lambs in spring. Each lodge sits with enough space between the others to feel like your own private corner of Somerset.

The lodges are properly fitted out: wood-burning stove in the living area, a kitchen with gas hob and fridge, hot running water for both the shower and the sink, and a wood-fired hot tub waiting on the veranda. Solar panels handle the electricity. The welcome hamper includes locally sourced milk and cheese. Lucy answers texts promptly and pops by to check things are working. This is the kind of operation where the care is in every cupboard, including the hot water bottles.

Castle Cary town is walkable, with independent restaurants and shops. Bruton is close by for culture and good food. Bicycles are available if you want to explore without the car, and Lucy offers pick-ups from Castle Cary station for train arrivals. The whole site can be booked across all three lodges for group celebrations.

Before you book

  • Spring and autumn nights can be genuinely cold; bring warm layers alongside the blankets provided.
  • No dogs on site.
One of the rare glamping operations where the off-grid credentials and the creature comforts actually coexist. Private hot tub, Mendip views, an owner who means it.

Why it made the cut

  • Three lodges only, genuine privacy, not a pod village
  • Solar-powered with wood-fired hot tub per lodge: off-grid in substance, not just in branding
  • Owner Lucy is present and attentive in a way that sets this apart from managed glamping operations
  • Somerset countryside setting with walking access into Castle Cary and proximity to Bruton
