Tir Bach
A properly remote, secret-feeling working farm in the Pembrokeshire hills below the Preseli mountains, perfect for animal-loving kids with roaming livestock, milking to watch and weekly pizza nights
Travelling to Tir Bach is like slowly stepping back in time. As you wind your way through the country lanes, having lost your phone signal seemingly hours ago, you might find yourself mispronouncing the name of the site to a local (say Bach like you're trying to cough up a hairball), and while desperately trying to remember which lane to take at "the old cottage that was painted a while back, yellow if I recall?" you'll suddenly feel a bit lighter and, well, from another time. Once you've cracked the code and found the site it will feel like you've entered an almost secret hideaway with your fellow campers. It is properly remote, a good half hour from the coast, but that is the whole charm; even on a bank holiday weekend you might find you have half the site to yourselves.
The 24 camping pitches are set on a hill that has been cleverly landscaped to offer both views of the Preseli mountains national park and flat camping. St Davids is a short drive away and Whitesands Bay can be reached on foot via the Pembrokeshire Coastal Path as it meanders around the Welsh shore. Owners Ashley and Roze moved here from Bristol and have always seen the site as a long term project, with every season bringing new additions to the facilities. The showers campers now single out as better than the ones at home, there are fridges and a freezer for guests, and the outdoor pizza oven they once dreamed of is well and truly built: pizza night is a weekly fixture, and you can buy a kit and cook your own.
Kids will be transfixed by the animals wandering the site and will get the chance to watch the cows being milked and take part in specially hosted events such as a campfire story night. For the adults, head to the Rose Bush for a drink or two, a short trip from the site and a true spit and sawdust venue full of friendly Welsh speaking locals. Back at Tir Bach, head to the communal fire pit to share stories and gloat about the secret campsite you share.
