The Sunny Field
An aptly named hilltop wildflower meadow in the Kent Downs, car-free and light-pollution-free within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, kept deliberately low in numbers for peace and quiet
Nestled on a hilltop in the Kent Downs, The Sunny Field is a wildflower meadow where the grass is left long and sways gently in the breeze as shadows lengthen on long days where, peculiarly, the sun shines more often than not. The camping field is large but owners Sasha and Philip like to keep the numbers low so everyone gets to experience their corner of the Garden of England in peace and quiet. It sits within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and, being car-free with no light pollution, the dawn chorus and the night skies are as much a part of the stay as the view.
The site looks down on Little Pett Bottom Farm where Sasha and Philip live in the farmhouse. Here you'll find the showers and, for such a simple site, an unexpected treat in the shape of a swimming pool. The facilities are kept deliberately simple, though every pitch now comes with its own fire pit and pioneer grill, logs are available on site, and there are horsebox showers and compost loos that are rather fun to use. For glampers there are beautifully presented bell tents, and on Saturdays the wood-fired pizzas are worth staying put for.
For supplies there is a local garage selling the basics and nearby Stelling Minnis has a great village shop. Farm shops can also be found at Wye and Sellindge. For days out you could take a short drive north to historic Canterbury or head south to Dover or Folkestone. Good nearby pubs include The Tiger Inn at Ashford, or just stay in the Sunny Field and work on your tan.
