Shallow Grange
A warmly-run working farm campsite in the Peak District with rolling Derbyshire Dales views, an on-site fishing pond, and spa-town Buxton the perfect base nearby
It's surprising what you stumble upon in the Peak District. After pitching at Shallow Grange under ominous skies, it was decided that some warming pints in Buxton were called for; this turned into a thorough review of Buxton's surprisingly good nightlife and the discovery that you don't get hangovers whilst sleeping in a tent (the extra oxygen, perhaps?). A more sober review of Buxton would highlight its heritage as a spa town, including the beautiful opera house and gardens, and that is definitely the main attraction.
Back at Shallow Grange you will be soothed by the rolling hills that surround the site. Head to the larger back field for complete peace (the site's easy accessibility means an occasional car can be heard in the main field) and even more panoramic views of the Derbyshire Dales; recent campers still rate the sunsets from up there. The facilities are ideal and as eco-friendly as possible, with clean hot showers, a laundry and WiFi, and the site is still a working farm that blends both businesses effortlessly. Owners Edward and Marilyn run a genuinely warm welcome and take real pride in the place. The location makes an ideal base for hiking the Peak District, with the routes that surround the farm including the High Peak, Tissington and Monsal Trails. Staying onsite you will find a fishing pond stocked with roach, perch and carp for just a few pounds a day.
The Church Inn is a 30-minute walk away with good ales, food and a fiercely fought Monday night pub quiz complete with free snacks. For some holiday reading, the Brierlow Bar Bookshop is just around the corner and claims to be the UK's biggest bargain bookshop. The best thing about Shallow Grange is the ease with which it lets you pick on a whim what each day entails. Shopping in Buxton? A long hike? Hop in the car and see where you end up? Lazing by the tent? It's got it all, and at around £22 a night for two with a tent it stays great value.
