Gupton Farm

National Trust-run coastal farm on Freshwater West: a 50-pitch site where the surf beach is a 15-minute walk and the Wales Coast Path runs past the gate.

Gupton Farm sits on a former traditional farm in south Pembrokeshire, run by the National Trust with a conservation ethos intact. The setting earns the listing: Freshwater West, one of the finest surf beaches on the Welsh coast, is a 15-minute walk downhill, and the Wales Coast Path passes the site so you can head east towards St Govan's Head, Stack Rocks, and the Green Bridge of Wales without getting in a car.

The facilities are housed in converted farm buildings, which gives the site more character than a prefab block ever could. There's a shared all-weather barn with fridges, freezers, sofas, and table tennis, plus a communal fire pit area, a dog wash station, and a hot outdoor shower for rinsing off after the beach. Showers in the main block are reported as variable in temperature, but everything else is well-kept and the staff are consistently well-regarded. Fifty pitches across open fields with good space between them, a mix of grass for tents and a handful of hardstanding bays for campervans and motorhomes, plus two pods.

Sunsets from the fields are worth planning around, and the views out towards the Pembrokeshire coast are wide. The site is quiet by design, open from early March to early November, and draws a mix of surfers, walkers, and families in equal measure.

Before you book

  • Only five hardstanding pitches for motorhomes and campervans; book early if arriving with a van.
  • Shower temperatures can be inconsistent, especially during busy periods.
A well-run National Trust farm that earns its reputation through setting rather than facilities: direct beach access, coast path on the doorstep, and communal spaces that feel genuinely useful rather than decorative.

Why it made the cut

  • Freshwater West beach is a 15-minute walk from the site, one of Pembrokeshire's best surf breaks
  • Wales Coast Path access opens up St Govan's Head, Stack Rocks, and the Green Bridge of Wales without driving
  • Converted farm buildings with all-weather barn, communal fire pit, and dog wash give the site real character
  • National Trust conservation operation with consistent owner-care; families, surfers, and walkers all well served
