Middle Beardshaw

A tiny, sheltered field for a few tents on a working farm in the Brontë country hills of East Lancashire, a mile from Trawden with campfires allowed on a stone platform

Amongst the windswept hills of Brontë country in East Lancashire sits a neatly manicured field. Sheltered by trees and an ancient stone wall, there is just enough room for a few tents to shelter their owners after long days exploring the striking landscape. This is Middle Beardshaw Head Farm; alongside the small but perfectly formed campsite there is a B&B and a beautiful old bunkhouse barn that attracts walkers from around the world. The clever location of the camping ground means tents are sheltered from the elements that can whip across the Lancashire hills, yet poke your head above the stone parapet and suddenly you're in the moorland and ready to strike out for the day.

The site feels remote but is just a mile from Trawden village, which boasts three pubs and a post office that sells groceries. From the site you can walk the Brontë Way to Haworth, the village where the sisters lived, and be back in time for tea. At the top of the camping area there is a stone platform where campfires are allowed; lighting one here and seeing the smoke drift across the hills is quite something.

Indeed everything about this area is dramatic, the man made relics of the industrial revolution contrasting with the ancient beauty of the landscape, making it amazing to reflect how the modern world was forged here. But now, as you zip up your tent, there is just silence and the promise of more adventures tomorrow.
