Ling's Meadow

A tiny, car-free family farm in Norfolk where just twenty campers lose themselves in four acres of waving meadow grass, with luxury compost loos and solar-heated showers

You'll never find a car in Ling's Meadow, and even people can be hard to spot in its four acres, but what you won't fail to recognise is the care that has gone into creating this beautiful site. A family farm since the 1930s, Kath Shearer and family have taken the farm's ethos to tread lightly on the land and fashioned a site that stays true to this belief. The sustainable outlook is most evident in the facilities, with luxury compost toilets (some of the best you will ever meet), solar and wood heated showers, and waste management via marginal plants. Just twenty or so campers are permitted at one time, with each pitch cleverly cut into the meadow; as the season progresses and the field flourishes the tents vanish amongst the waving grass. Sitting outside your tent you might spot barn owls swooping, hares darting about, or simply enjoy the sunsets.

Whilst it's possible to disappear into the meadow, a shared campfire and camp kitchen create a sense of community, and if you fancy some locally produced food, provisions packs are available to order including a BBQ, a cooked breakfast and the hearty 'Farmers Breakfast'. If you're feeling adventurous you can whip up a margarita, fire up the clay pizza oven, and grab a handful of basil from the herb garden.

The Shearers encourage eco travel and offer a discount for campers arriving by public transport. If taking a tent on the bus doesn't appeal, there are fully equipped bell tents for hire and a cosy StarDome glamping unit if you want a roof and a bit of comfort, or, for the ultra-light, bedding to rent by the night. With bikes free to hire you have no excuse not to explore the National Cycle Network that passes near the site, and suddenly beautiful Norfolk is yours to discover.
