Lions Row
A working farm in the Deben National Landscape that goes properly off-grid without going without, compostable loos, hot showers, campfires, and hosts Jess and Charlie who actually check in on you.
Lions Row sits in Loudham, a quiet fold of Suffolk between Pettistree and Ufford, on a farm where the evidence of working land is all around you, venison to buy, logs for the burner, buzzards nesting in the trees at the edge of the field. Jess and Charlie run it with the kind of attention that shows in the details: quirky decorative touches that give the place its own character, facilities that are clean and clearly cared for, and the habit of wandering over to check you have everything you need.
The pitches are generous and well-separated, which matters more than it sounds when you have children flying kites or building dens in the forest. The compostable toilets provoke the usual scepticism and the usual pleasant surprise, spotless, odourless, and backed up by hot showers and proper drinking water. There are no electric hookups and no shop down the lane; the trade-off is the kind of quiet that makes evenings round the fire feel genuinely earned.
The location earns its place in the Deben Peninsula National Landscape. Sutton Hoo is ten minutes away, Woodbridge and its Tide Mill another five after that. Two pubs are walkable from the field, the White Lion at Ufford (1.2 miles) and the Greyhound at Pettistree (1.4 miles), and Aldeburgh beach is half an hour by car. Framlingham Castle and Orford Castle are within easy day-trip range. Kayaking on the Deben starts ten minutes away.
