Swattesfield Campsite
Camping and glamping across seven acres of fields and woodland deep in the North Suffolk countryside near Eye and Diss, so Tolkienesque and car-free you'll swear you've reached the Shire
With civilisation long since left behind and many country lanes navigated, you'll be forgiven for thinking you've stumbled into the Shire when you arrive at Swattesfield. Set across seven acres of open fields and woodland deep in the North Suffolk countryside, near Eye and Diss, the Tolkienesque feel is completed by two 'Pixie huts', Weggle and Swaggle. These octagonal huts are hobbit sized but come complete with double beds, cots for the kids and a wood burning stove; more glamping is available in the form of bell tents, a hay cart and a retro Eriba caravan. For campers there are no set pitches, just find your spot in the main field or the smaller meadow overlooking a beautiful little pond.
No cars are allowed on site, which enhances the bucolic fantasy, and it's a seemingly small touch but bunting hangs on the toilet block, making even the mundane seem a little more special. The facilities are kept spotless, there's a fully equipped communal kitchen, and the welcome is as warm as everyone says. Fire pits are available to hire and a clay pizza oven invites you to flex your camping culinary muscles.
For nights when you fancy being waited on, the Thornham Coach House is a short walk away, as well as the 12th century Four Horseshoes pub in Thornham Magna, which claims to be the oldest pub in Suffolk. More energetically, the nearby Thornham Walks are 12 miles of waymarked footpaths through the walled Thornham Estate. The trail is dotted with art, interesting rocks (!) and leads to a Victorian folly before ending at tea rooms for refuelling.
