Iona Campsite
The only campsite on the Isle of Iona: tent-only, family-run, and sitting inside one of the most spiritually charged small islands in Britain.
Iona is a mile wide and three and a half miles long, home to 170 people and one of Scotland's great pilgrimage sites. This campsite, run by Zoe and Glen, sits at the quieter end of the island, close enough to the village and ferry to be convenient and far enough from tourist traffic to feel genuinely removed. The ground is even and sheltered from the prevailing wind, which makes a real difference on an exposed Hebridean island.
Thirty-one tent pitches, all on grass, with Hebridean sea light falling over the whole thing. The facilities are a step above what 'basic island camping' implies: hot showers, a kitchen shelter with microwave, kettle, fridge, and toaster, communal fire pits, and a BBQ area. It's a family-run farm operation that has quietly invested in the detail, and it shows. The owners know the island inside out and give guests the kind of local knowledge that changes a trip.
From the site you can walk to Iona Abbey in minutes, reach the white sand of Port Ban beach, or take the longer loop south to St Columba's Bay. The island's silence at low tide is its own thing. Rare birds, sheep, and the odd cathedral-quiet morning are the main entertainment here.
Before you book
- Iona is reached by a short Caledonian MacBrayne ferry from Fionnphort on Mull; vehicles are not permitted on the ferry for day visitors, and the campsite is foot-access only.
- The disabled toilet and shower room has a step at the base of the ramp and paths that may be difficult to navigate in a wheelchair.
“The only campsite on Iona, and the right one to be. Family-run with genuine warmth, better facilities than its setting suggests, and the whole island on your doorstep.”
