Clachan Sands Camping Area
A working croft on the Atlantic edge of North Uist where you pay into an honesty box and wake up to Clachan Sands on your doorstep.
Clachan Sands sits on the northwest shore of North Uist in the Outer Hebrides, set directly behind the dunes of Clachan Sands beach with the Atlantic stretching out in front of every pitch. You arrive across island roads, settle onto grass, and the sea is right there. The host Rachel runs the site with a hands-on care that goes well beyond what the facilities suggest.
The setup is deliberately minimal: water tap, bins, a honesty box at £15 a night. Bring everything else. That simplicity is the point. Pitches are spacious and face the ocean, so you get the tide coming and going, turquoise water in good light, and sunsets that last. Drop down to the beach for a swim or walk through the machair and dunes along the coast. The variety of birdlife alone is worth a morning.
Lochmaddy ferry terminal is around 7 miles away and Berneray ferry around 5 miles, making this a natural stop on an Outer Hebrides island-hop. The site is exposed to onshore winds, so pitch placement matters. Pick your spot thoughtfully and bring a good windbreak if you need one. Open April to September.
