Balinoe Campsite

The Hebrides' honest base camp: a small, owner-run field on the Isle of Tiree with views to Mull and the Treshnish Isles, ten minutes from the sand.

Balinoe sits in the south-west of Tiree, one of the most windswept and luminous islands in the Inner Hebrides, and the location is the whole point. Views stretch to Mull and the Treshnish Isles from the field, and Tiree's famous beaches are a ten-minute walk from the gate. You're arriving by Calmac ferry from the mainland, which is already a statement of intent.

William runs the site with a direct, unhurried style: he meets the ferry and walks new arrivals around on arrival, then stays reachable by phone. Facilities are basic and the site is honest about that. There are showers, a communal kitchen and bothy with a cooker, fridges, freezers, and a kettle. The bothy doubles as a proper shelter when Atlantic weather rolls in, which on Tiree it will. Pitches are generous and the site keeps itself clean through twice-daily rounds.

This is a campsite for people who have come to Tiree for Tiree. The island's beaches, its flat open light, and its sense of genuine remoteness are what make the trip. Balinoe gives you a serviceable, affordable base to come back to after a day of it.

Before you book

  • Ferry-only access via Calmac from Oban; book crossings well ahead in summer.
  • Facilities are deliberately basic: three showers, communal kitchen, portaloo-style toilets. Expect a rustic setup.
The right campsite for the right island: no frills, owner-present, and perfectly placed for Tiree's beaches and big Hebridean sky.

Why it made the cut

  • Owner William is genuinely present: meets the ferry, does inductions, stays responsive
  • Ten-minute walk to beach; well-positioned for exploring the whole island
  • Budget price for a real island camping experience
