Balranald Hebridean Holidays
A family-run campsite inside the RSPB's Balranald Nature Reserve on North Uist, with Horseshoe Bay 40 metres from the gate and St Kilda on the horizon at sunset.
Balranald sits at the western edge of North Uist within the RSPB's Balranald Nature Reserve, where machair grassland meets the Hebridean Atlantic. Horseshoe Bay is 40 metres from the site entrance: white sand, wild swimming, kayaking, paddleboarding, and kite surfing, all without driving anywhere. On a clear evening, St Kilda sits on the horizon beyond the bay.
The campsite itself is run with quiet attentiveness. The heated facilities block is kept to a very high standard throughout the day, and the on-site Dunes Cabin serves homemade food a few days a week. A 24-hour self-service Larder next door covers the rest: fresh eggs, lobster, ice cream, and gluten-free brownies. It is the kind of small-site abundance that makes you stay two nights longer than planned.
Pitches cover tents, caravans, and motorhomes, with electric hookup throughout. The two-hour headland walk from the campsite takes in Hougharry Bay and Poll na Crann before looping back across the reserve. Wading birds and farmland species nest on the surrounding croft land: this is a birder's site that happens to be excellent for everyone else too.

“One of the most compellingly placed campsites in Scotland: inside an RSPB reserve, 40 metres from a white-sand Hebridean bay, with the kind of owner care that makes the facilities block a genuine pleasure to use.”
