Deepdale Camping & Rooms
An award-winning North Norfolk site under big skies, where Sioux-style teepees, yurts and shepherd's huts join tent paddocks, with Dalegate Market on the doorstep and dark skies made for stargazing
It must be the big skies that Norfolk shares with the Great Plains of the US, as the row of bright white teepees that sit at the top of Deepdale look perfectly at home overlooking the gently rolling countryside. As well as the authentic Sioux-style teepees there are English shepherd's huts, Mongolian yurts and, completing the international flavour, comfortable private rooms and a hostel housed in a 17th-century granary. But campers are well served too, with five camping paddocks keeping good old tents very much the focus.
The site is a well-maintained mix of modern facilities and traditional red flint farm buildings; the amenity block is genuinely impressive, with private shower rooms, underfloor heating and thoughtful touches that win it award after award. Right next door sits the classy Dalegate Market, which includes a great cafe, galleries, clothes shops, bike hire and a supermarket, so you have pretty much everything you need on the doorstep, and it's a dog-friendly site too. You'll be spending most of your time off-site, with the North Norfolk Coast spoilt for activities. For walkers there's easy access to the coastal path leading to Wells-next-the-Sea, Sheringham, Blakeney, Cromer and many inland routes. Watersports enthusiasts are well served with sailing, kite surfing and sea kayaking on offer, and history buffs can enjoy the abundance of castles and forts in the area.
Finally, when you're hungry, the area is renowned for its seafood, and there's a fine beachside pub within walking distance as well as the famous local crab. If reading that sounds exhausting, a strict no-noise-after-10pm policy makes the clear open skies perfect for quiet contemplation of the stars (there are even organised stargazing events), then an early night ensures you'll be ready to head off again tomorrow.
