Scaldbeck Cottage
A tiny, unpretentious tents-only gem set on Morston Marsh, born from a garden wedding and capped at twelve people, with the Norfolk Coast Path minutes away
Are all the best campsites born from happy accidents? When Ned and Roberta Hamond held their daughter's wedding in the garden of their cottage it was such a success that a campsite was born. Entering Scaldbeck Cottage you pass Ned's son Nick's workshop that gives the place a pleasant buzz, on a bit further and you'll park your car before wandering past a big oak tree, and you're in the site. Boats sit under tarpaulins hinting at the nearby Morston Quay and horses graze in the next field over. It's very simple, very unpretentious, and you can see why that wedding willed it into existence. Roberta's no-frills welcome is still the thing guests remember most.
A maximum of 12 people (not pitches) are allowed on site at one time, across two quiet fields, ensuring the place never feels crowded. No cars are allowed in the camping field, each pitch has its own picnic table with plenty of space around it, and best of all a cooked breakfast is available courtesy of the on-site b&b. There's only one toilet and shower, but they're kept spotless with nice warm water, and the laid-back feel of the site means even this is unlikely to be a problem. Dogs are welcome too.
As well as getting the camping right the site is in a perfect location for the Norfolk Coast Path, with the Morston Marshes just a few minutes' stroll away. The Anchor Inn is a quarter of a mile away in Morston village, and Holkham beach is a ten minute drive if you fancy a proper stretch of sand. Venture a little further and you must take a boat trip from Morston Quay to Blakeney Point to spot the seals.
