Four Oaks Camping
Two secluded Norfolk meadows run with genuine eco conviction by hosts who clearly love what they've built.
Four Oaks Camping sits across a pair of meadows in North Wootton, a few miles south of King's Lynn, on the former trackbed of the railway that once ran to Sandringham Estate and Hunstanton. The site trades hard on what it doesn't have: no electric hookup, no mains water at the pitch, no noise after dark. What it does have is fire pits, wood sold on site, eco toilets, solar-powered lighting, and hosts Simon and Asia who meet you on arrival and treat you like a friend from the start.
The meadows are genuinely spacious and the pitches are far enough apart that you could have the site to yourself on quieter nights, which several guests have done. Wildlife is a real draw: buzzards and kestrels overhead by day, bats at dusk, tawny and barn owls and foxes after dark. The eco credentials go beyond the composting loos: plant-based soap and washing-up liquid in the facilities, recycling bins, and a stripped-back setup that keeps the footprint small. Swings, chess and draughts add something without cluttering the feel.
Castle Rising Castle is a few miles east and there's a tearoom in the village. Sandringham Estate and the Snettisham RSPB Reserve are both within easy reach. The North Norfolk Coast is a short drive for a day at the sea. The King's Lynn to Walsingham Way trail is a 29-mile walking route from the area if you want to cover some ground on foot. Village pubs and shops are accessible, either on foot (around 40 minutes) or a short drive. One honest note: the showers run cold, and the site has no signs on the road in, so arrive with directions downloaded.
