Cwellyn Arms Campsite
A no-vehicle mountain campsite in Eryri's backyard, with Snowdon looming over one shoulder and Llyn Cwellyn shimmering below the other.
Cwellyn Arms Campsite sits in Rhyd Ddu, a small village on the A4085 between Caernarfon and Beddgelert, at the foot of Snowdon within Eryri National Park. Both the Rhyd Ddu path and the Snowdon Ranger path start from the village itself, which means you can lace up your boots at the tent door and be on the mountain within minutes.
The two camping fields are car-free once you've unloaded, and communal fire pits anchor the social life of the site. Views take in Snowdon, Mynydd Mawr, and Llyn Cwellyn directly below: not borrowed views through a gap in the hedge, but the kind of uninterrupted mountain panorama that earns a site its reputation. The amenity block is modern and heated underfloor, a meaningful detail when the mountain weather turns in September.
The Cwellyn Arms pub is attached to the site and does proper homemade food. It's popular with walkers and genuinely dog-friendly inside. The Welsh Highland Railway passes through Rhyd Ddu, and fishing on Llyn Cwellyn, Llyn Nantlle, Afon Gwyrfai, and Llyn Dwyarchen is available on-site and nearby.
