Turner Hall Farm Campsite

A no-frills, first-come-first-served farm site for walkers and the peace loving, tucked away in the little-known Duddon Valley with the fells rising straight from the gate

Turner Hall Farm sits away from the hustle and bustle in the relatively unknown but beautiful Duddon Valley. The site is unapologetically aimed at walkers and hikers; it runs on a first come, first served basis, so on arrival you'll spot a sign instructing you to pitch and pay in the morning, then it's up to you which of the trails to conquer first. Bring cash, as that is how you settle up. A short walk finds the Walna Scar track which takes you to Dow Crag and the Old Man peak. The area offers hikes for all abilities, from the formidable Scafell Pike to easier walks across Birker Fell to Eskdale or along the Dunnerdale Fells.

The main camping area is an undulating rocky hillock that mixes flat areas amongst larger boulders, offering shelter and privacy. Despite the remote surroundings the site is perfectly maintained, with vivid green grass that contrasts with the wild crags. Even at peak times the scale of Turner Farm means you can choose to camp as far from any neighbours as you please, though on the busiest days finding a properly flat pitch takes a little hunting, so it pays to arrive early. If you don't mind a short walk to the (paid) showers you can head to one of the far paddocks to get a near wild camping experience. The facilities are clean and modern and just what you need after a hard day on the fells, and there are thoughtful extras too, a small playground away from the pitches and even a freezer for your ice packs.

You'll be walking up a thirst and, despite the remote feel of the site, The Newfield Inn is just a short walk away in Seathwaite serving good food and ale, with waterfalls to admire (or plunge into) on the way. For supplies to fuel your hikes there is a shop 3 miles away in Ulpha, and further afield Broughton-in-Furness offers a range of shops and pubs.
