Holme Open Farm

A genuine working farm near Sedbergh reached by two routes, with animals to feed, a flat spacious field beneath the Howgill Fells and a firepit waiting on arrival

There are two ways into Holme Farm. You'll probably want to use the easy route just off the A683 but should your sat nav take you on the scenic route via the rolling fields of the farm don't fret too much as you stop to open the many gates that keep the farm's hill sheep from wandering too far. It's these kind of unexpected adventures that make camping so unique and as you arrive in the farmyard you'll feel like you've discovered something special. Either way, the final approach is over a very narrow bridge, so if you're towing or in anything wide it's worth checking before you commit. But feel free to high-tail it home on the A-roads after you've enjoyed your stay on this wonderful site.

We often recommend sites as working farms but Holme Farm really lives up to the billing. Several hundred sheep graze the 120 acres of farmland and there are pedigree cattle, goats, ducks, pigs and even some wary farm cats. You can take a guided tour of the farm and experience the simple pleasure of feeding the animals. Children have a play area to explore and the onsite Ewe Tree Cafe serves locally sourced, homemade food. Otherwise there is much to explore in the immediate vicinity of the farm. A Roman Road crosses the site and the remains of Stone age huts can be found nearby on Middleton Common. If you look closely you might even spot some rare orchids. For good food and drink nearby Sedbergh offers a traditional tea room, shops and the Bull Inn.

The main camping field is flat, simple and spacious with beautiful views of the Howgill Fells. The River Rawthey runs at the foot of the field and is ideal for paddling. The facilities are simple so don't go looking for luxury, the toilet block is basic but kept clean, with paid showers, but with a firepit and wood supplied on arrival what more could you need?
