Moss Side Farm Campsite

A working Lakeland hill farm in a woodland valley, with Kirkby Pool glinting in the distance and farm dogs that will absolutely adopt you.

Moss Side Farm sits in the south-west Lake District, tucked into a woodland valley above Broughton-in-Furness. The views look down across the tree canopy to Kirkby Pool, which meanders along the valley floor before eventually meeting the Irish Sea. It is a working hill farm in the old sense: cows, ducks, and a rotating cast of dogs who treat the campsite as their domain.

Pitches are mainly grass with a few hardstanding bays, and the site also runs rail cabins and a bunkhouse for when the weather turns. The host, Louise, is the kind of owner who upgrades soaked campers to a cabin without being asked. Dogs are welcome on leads. There is a hot tub on site, a fire pit area, and a walk down the old railway line that reaches Broughton village in about 35 minutes, where you will find a bakery, a butcher, a grocer, and pubs.

Coniston Water is a 15-minute drive. Windermere is 40 minutes. The Blacksmiths Arms at Broughton Mills is over the next valley when you want a proper pub without the tourist trail. The site is open year-round, which is unusual for the Lakes and means it catches the quieter shoulder seasons well.
