Eskdale Campsite

A proper Lake District valley base, National Trust, 8 acres of meadow grassland, with Scafell and Esk Pike on your doorstep and two village pubs at the end of the road.

Eskdale Campsite sits low in the Eskdale valley, ringed by woodland, crags and the kind of fells that make you plan your boots the night before. The National Trust runs it with quiet competence: level pitches, clean facilities, helpful staff who know the valley and its quirks. At 110 pitches it's a larger site than most on Campr, but the valley setting and NT curation keep it from feeling commercial.

The location does serious work here. Stanley Ghyll Force waterfall, Blea Tarn and Burnmoor Tarn are within easy reach. Hardknott Roman Fort and Hardknott Pass are close for those who want history alongside the hiking. The Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway (the Ratty) is a ten-minute walk, and the Boot Inn and Brookhouse Inn are both a short stroll from the gate, so evenings take care of themselves without needing a car.

Pitch types cover most bases: grass tent pitches, caravan and motorhome bays with electric hookup, a bell tent and camping pods for those who want a roof. Dogs are actively welcome and there is a proper grooming shower behind reception. The on-site shop covers essentials. No fires on site, which is standard for a National Trust operation of this size.

Before you book

  • No campfires or open flames on site; BBQs permitted off the ground.
  • The site is quite remote without your own vehicle; the nearest town is not within easy walking distance.
The Eskdale valley location earns this site its reputation: fell walking from the pitch, two good village pubs around the corner, and enough space to lose yourself in a landscape that rewards the effort of getting there.

Why it made the cut

  • Direct fell access to Scafell, Esk Pike and the wider Lake District high ground from the campsite gate
  • National Trust operation with reliable facilities and staff who actually help
  • Dog shower on site and genuinely dog-welcome ethos, not just tolerance
  • Two proper village pubs within a short walk, removing the need to drive for an evening meal
