Treen Farm Campsite

A gloriously exposed clifftop campsite in a former WW2 radar station above Treen, Cornwall, where the perfect turquoise beach of Pedn Vounder lies right below

There can't be too many campsites with a toilet block that once served as a WW2 barracks, but Treen Farm claims this alongside one of the most spectacular locations in Cornwall. Radar waves must enjoy beautiful cliff tops as much as campers, but luckily the RAF relinquished control to the Halls, who have run Treen Farm without military interference ever since. Sitting below the site lies the turquoise blue sea and white sands of Pedn Vounder beach, popular with sunbathers and the occasional naturist. Slightly further along the coast lies the unique Minack Theatre at Porthcurno beach, where the stage and seats are carved into the rock with the sea as a stunning backdrop. In Treen village itself you'll find the Logan Rock Inn, an ideal place to get stuck into Cornish ales.

The cliff top setting offers sea views to die for but is very exposed, so make sure you don't go easy on the pegging, and be ready for some pitches that slope more than you'd like. Treen Farm is quite tranquil, attracting mainly couples and families, with most campers in bed early in anticipation of another day on the beach.

With the popularity of unique sites like Treen Farm rising in recent years, it's often necessary to book months in advance elsewhere, which goes against the laid back grain of camping somewhat. Refreshingly, there is still no pre-booking here. That can be frustrating in high summer, when the reality is staying nearby and physically queuing each morning in the hope of a space, but if you fancy a last minute dash to the coast simply get here before breakfast and you can be pitched and on the beach by lunchtime. It isn't the cheapest for a facilities-light site, so go for the location and the view rather than the frills.
