Retorrick Mill
A bohemian, communal camping site hidden in Cornwall's Lanherne Valley, with a cosy live-music bar, courtyard fire pit, and a car-free clearing that feels genuinely cool without trying too hard
You have to use the word "vibe" when describing Retorrick Mill. On the face of it a simple, independent site hidden in the Lanherne Valley, with caravans, cabins and chalets as well as camping, but there's something else in the air. It might be the surf types drawn to the site by the excellent local beaches, or the genuine, easy-going nature of owner Wilf, but Retorrick Mill feels special. That aforementioned vibe is bohemian, communal and cool, but not try-hard. A central covered courtyard is full of mismatched furniture, not out of some attempt to appear shabby chic but simply what has been found or donated to the site along the way.
Key to the feel is the cosy little bar, where you can get to know Wilf and a few of the locals while enjoying some live music, and it now has a proper kitchen turning out food that recent campers rave about. The nearby communal fire pit is no stranger to acoustic guitars, and large groups are welcome, a rarity at a place you'd actually want to stay. Keeping up the feel is the main camping area, an enclosed clearing that can only be reached via a wooded path and footbridge over a stream. It's almost a piece of theatre as you leave the real world and enter your own camping bubble, with no cars, just your tent, the stars and the wind in the trees.
The stunning Mawgan Porth beach is a short walk away; sheltered by cliffs, it's the one to head for on a relaxing day in the sun. On your more active days visit Watergate Bay for surfing, then bring the appetite back to the on-site bar and kitchen for dinner and a band. If you want a big one, Newquay is just five miles to the south-west.
