Cotna Eco Retreat

Four-unit organic smallholding glamping on the Roseland Peninsula, where Sara and Dave's food hampers and a footpath to the sea do the heavy lifting.

Cotna sits in a sheltered valley on the Roseland Peninsula, an organic smallholding running three yurts and a shepherd's hut on permaculture principles. With just four units on site, it never feels like a venue. The owners, Sara and Dave, are the place: baking sourdough for morning hampers, growing the vegetables that end up in your evening meal, and handing you a paper map of the local trails because the phone signal is patchy and the walks are better without one.

A footpath and stream lead down from the site toward the sea. Gorran Haven is walkable, as are Hemmick Beach and Portmellon. Caerhays, Vault, and other local beaches are within reach without a car. The Lost Gardens of Heligan are 2 miles away; the Eden Project is a short drive beyond that. The South West Coast Path threads through the area, and for those who want more range, the Camel Trail at Wadebridge is under an hour.

The accommodation is genuinely comfortable. Yurts are warm and weatherproof; the shepherd's hut suits couples or solo travellers. Fire pits are on site. Facilities are simple: toilets and showers, but the eco ethos is active rather than apologetic. Cotna is a working smallholding first, a glamping site second, and that ordering matters.

Before you book

  • Summer bookings (school holidays) require 3, 4, or 7-night stays with check-in on Mondays or Fridays only.
  • Phone signal is limited on site.
A rare Cornish smallholding that earns its reputation through genuinely owner-led hospitality: the hampers, the hens, the hand-drawn trail maps. The setting and the people are the product.

Why it made the cut

  • Owner-run organic farm with active hospitality: food hampers, bread-baking classes, farm animals
  • Walkable to multiple South Cornwall beaches and the South West Coast Path without a car
  • Tiny scale (4 units) means it never feels crowded or impersonal
  • Roseland Peninsula location combines named coastal setting with valley shelter
