Blackdown Yurts

Four yurts in an AONB valley on the Devon-Somerset fringe, where repeat guests keep coming back and the barn saves you when the rain arrives.

Blackdown Yurts sits in a gently sloping pasture on the edge of the Blackdown Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, a few miles from Cullompton. There are four yurts, and the site is small enough that you can book the lot for a group. Each has its own mini kitchen, private toilet, and drinkable tap water; the proper shower block is shared. Inside, wood burners and comfortable beds make cold-season stays genuinely appealing rather than just possible.

The wildlife habitat on the adjacent hillside brings deer, foxes, owls, buzzards and badgers into view, and light pollution here is low enough that the Milky Way is a realistic prospect on a clear night. Views across the field are of sheep in pasture, which is precisely the Devon countryside framing this valley trades in. Walks and cycling routes run directly from the site, with local beaches and various Devon attractions within reach of a day out.

The barn is the site's undersung asset: equipped with a gas kitchen, microwave, fridges, a large communal table, and its own fire, it makes the space function for groups regardless of weather. Hosts Katie and Mark have built a following of guests who return year after year, some booking all four yurts together for birthdays, work retreats, and reunions. The tone throughout is relaxed and hands-on rather than managed-from-a-distance.

A well-run valley glamping site in the Blackdown Hills AONB that earns its reputation through genuinely attentive hosts and a setup that works as well for a family week as it does for a whole-site group hire.

Why it made the cut

  • Blackdown Hills AONB setting with real dark skies and active wildlife on the adjacent hillside
  • Katie and Mark are the kind of hosts who think of marshmallows for the kids and a washing line for the adults
  • Barn with kitchen and fire makes the site function properly for groups and in poor weather
  • Four yurts at a scale that allows whole-site hire without becoming impersonal
