Penhein Glamping
Eight Persian-style canvas tents in Monmouthshire woodland, with views stretching across the valley to the Severn and a lambing season that families will talk about for years.
Penhein sits in semi-ancient woodland on a family-run farm in Monmouthshire, and the approach tells you exactly what kind of place it is: eight handmade alachigh tents, each set apart in the trees with its own fire pit, wood-burning stove, en-suite toilet, and a proper bed made up with real linen. The Persian-domed canvas structures are bespoke, not catalogue-bought, and the difference shows in the details.
The wider view from the dining area stretches across the meadows and down the valley to the River Severn, with the lights of England visible on clear evenings. The Wye Valley and the Forest of Dean are close enough for a day's kayaking, mountain biking, or caving in the old mines. Grey Hill is within reach for a proper walk. For most guests, though, the draw is the farm itself: in spring, Penhein runs lambing experiences where guests can assist with deliveries and feed orphan lambs.
The on-site pantry (called the Cheats Kitchen) stocks fresh produce for guests who'd rather not cook on the fire every meal, and the shower block is underfloor-heated and spotlessly maintained. Wifi and laundry are available. Dogs are welcome. The whole operation is owner-run, and it reads like it: the tents are checked, the communal areas are well-stocked, and Helen Hearn's presence at seasonal events like lambing live is the kind of thing guests mention by name.
