Oakwood Caravan & Camping Park

A modern, well-run base in Cairngorms oak woodland, where you cycle into Aviemore and come back to one of the best campsite showers in Scotland.

Oakwood sits within ancient oak woodland inside Cairngorms National Park, a short cycle from Aviemore village via the Orbital foot and cycle path. The mountain range forms the backdrop, and pitches under the tree canopy give you real shelter alongside a sense of place that most Aviemore-area sites can't match. The Aviemore Kart Raceway is a short walk through the trees, the Strathspey Steam Railway is close by, and Cairngorm Mountain is the obvious next day out.

The site opened in 2018 and shows it: modern heated toilet and shower blocks with genuinely impressive water pressure, a laundry room, dishwashing area, free WiFi at reception, and a covered seating area for when the Highlands does what the Highlands does. There's a mix of hardstanding and grass pitches for caravans, motorhomes, and campervans, plus tent pitches under the oak canopy and glamping pods for those who want a roof. A food truck operates on site. The playground is central and visible from pitches, which families notice.

No open fires apply here, as on all sites within the National Park. BBQs are permitted if raised off the ground and out by 10pm. Dogs are welcome on lead, up to two per pitch. The ground under the oak canopy is firm and can be hard for pegs, so bring longer or more robust ones if you're tenting beneath the trees.

Before you book

  • No open fires under National Park rules; BBQs must be raised off the ground and extinguished by 10pm.
  • Ground under the oak canopy can be very hard, making standard tent pegs difficult to drive in.
A solid, genuinely well-run family base in the Cairngorms, trading on oak woodland, the best showers you'll find at this price point in Highland Scotland, and easy access to Aviemore on two wheels.

Why it made the cut

  • Ancient oak woodland within Cairngorms National Park gives it setting that most Aviemore-area sites lack
  • Modern, consistently praised facilities, particularly the heated shower blocks
  • Cycle path into Aviemore removes the need to move the car once you've pitched
  • Works across pitch types: tourers, motorhomes, tents, and pods all genuinely integrated
