Maker Camping
Perched on the Rame Peninsula with panoramic views across Plymouth Sound, Maker Heights is a community-run campsite where the setting does the heavy lifting.
Maker Camping sits at the top of the Rame Peninsula at Maker Heights, with the kind of open view across Plymouth Sound that stops you mid-sentence. On a clear morning the water stretches to the horizon; at night the lights of Plymouth glitter across the estuary. The site feels genuinely wild in character despite being well-connected: tall grass, insects, birdsong, and the occasional cricket chorus after dark.
The walk down to Kingsand and Cawsand takes about 20 minutes on foot, and the South West Coast Path runs through the area for those who want to extend further along the peninsula. A bus stops right outside the site entrance, so you can leave the car behind. On site, The Canteen does breakfasts, lunches, and cream teas; The Garrison cocktail bar draws the evening crowd with live music at weekends. There is a common room with sofas, charging sockets, books, board games, a large communal washing-up area, and shared fridge-freezer space.
The feel here is sociable rather than solitary. Families return year after year, groups take over pitches together, and the community hub character of the place means there is usually something happening. It works best for people who want a proper coastal setting with good food and drink on their doorstep, and who are content with festival-adjacent infrastructure rather than pristine facilities.
