Howbeck Lodge

A working farm on the Cumbria Way where the host still checks in on you, the stream is real, and the Lake District is a stone's throw away.

Howbeck Lodge sits just outside Hesket Newmarket in the Northern Lakes, a family-run farm that takes tents, tourers, pods, a shepherd's hut, and a self-contained country cabin. Seven minutes' walk along the road brings you to The Old Crown, the village's cooperatively owned brewery pub. The M6 is 10 miles back at Penrith North; after that, you quickly feel a long way from it.

The farm is the setting, not just the backdrop. There are animals to visit (accompanied by an adult), a scenic stream running through the camping field, and the kind of owners who come out to ask how your stay is going. The Glamping Pod Plus sits high enough to look back down over the farm. Evenings, the site can arrange breakfast and meals, which makes it genuinely self-contained for walkers who've come off the Cumbria Way.

The converted-outbuilding facilities are basic and unisex but, in most accounts, kept clean and hot. The shepherd's hut and cabin have en-suite bathrooms if that matters to you. Lake District National Park, the Solway Coast, and Hadrian's Wall are all accessible as day trips, which makes this a useful base for exploring the Northern Lakes edge of the national park without pitching in the middle of it.
