Henry's Campsite

The most southerly campsite in the UK, an eccentric, characterful and unique Lizard hideaway of gaudily painted buildings, wildflowers and a menagerie that even runs to llamas among the palm trees

Sometimes you wonder where some of the 'characters' who enliven our best music festivals come from, what's their natural habitat and where do they go once it's over? One likely location is Henry's, the most southerly campsite in the UK. This famous campsite feels like an outpost of Glastonbury tucked onto the sole of the country, with the same creative spirit that makes something like the Lost Vagueness field so special. Wandering the site it's possible to almost get lost, stumbling across a clearing full of roosting chickens before heading on your way. This serendipity is quite deliberate.

The site has been lovingly cobbled together from gaudily painted buildings, scattered artwork and winding paths surrounded by wildflowers to create a truly unique campsite. The grounds are gardened just once a season then allowed to grow unhindered for the rest of the year, creating a mix of hidden groves just big enough for one tent and larger spaces where groups can gather. There's a proper menagerie to visit too, chickens, ducks, goats, pigs, quail and even llamas among the palm trees. One welcome rule in this laid back paradise is the banning of mobile ringtones on site, and the eccentricity extends right into the shower block, which is spotless, surprisingly modern and pipes out Classic FM while you wash.

Stepping out of the site's bubble you have Lizard village a couple of minutes walk, offering pubs, shops and pasties, and a secluded rocky cove is a short walk down through the valley. The beautiful Kynance Cove is about a mile away with famous fans including the esteemed Alfred Lord Tennyson. Not to be missed is buying mackerel from the day's catch at Cadgwith then heading back to Henry's for a BBQ. Henry's is open all year round, so if it's cold outside and you're feeling brave, head down to the Lizard, settle in by the fire pit for the nightly sing song, and find some cider to warm you up.
