Glenshiel Campsite

Riverside campsite pitched directly beneath the Five Sisters of Kintail, run by hands-on owners who'll give you and your dog a lift up the road if you ask nicely.

Glenshiel Campsite sits in the floor of Glen Shiel with the Five Sisters of Kintail rising on all sides and a river close enough to hear from your pitch. It is a small, recently refurbished site with grass tent pitches and generously sized hardstanding bays for caravans and motorhomes: a practical base for serious mountain days that doesn't sacrifice setting to get there.

The owners, Ant and Sue, run things in the way that earns repeat visits: facilities clean and well-maintained, honesty-box laundry, friendly enough to give solo walkers a lift to the trailhead. The campsite is a common staging point for the Cape Wrath Trail and the South Shiel Ridge, and the Kintail Lodge is walkable along the road for an evening meal. There is also a small chocolate shop at the site entrance for the return journey.

Facilities are straightforward: showers, toilets, electric hookup, and a laundry block. Nothing fancy, which suits the location. The drama is outside, and on a clear Highland morning it is considerable.

Before you book

  • Popular in peak season; book ahead to secure a pitch rather than risk arriving to a full site.
  • £35 per pitch places it at the higher end for the area, though the setting justifies it for most.
One of the finest positioned campsites in the Scottish Highlands: a working small site directly beneath a named mountain range, run by owners who care.

Why it made the cut

  • Five Sisters of Kintail on three sides with a river immediately adjacent
  • Genuinely hands-on owners who create an atmosphere well above the facilities level
  • Works equally well as a hillwalking base and a touring stopover on the road to Skye
  • Dogs actively welcomed, not just tolerated
