Camping Skye

Community-owned and genuinely cared-for, this Broadford base puts all of Skye within reach without the faff of finding somewhere to stay.

Camping Skye sits at the west end of Broadford village, just off the A87, and makes no secret of what it is: a well-run, community-owned site designed to do the job properly. Twenty flat tent pitches and 26 hardstanding motorhome and caravan bays with electric hookup, all laid out with enough space between them to feel unhurried. Profits go back into the local community, which tells you something about the ownership culture before you've even pitched your tent.

Facilities are a cut above what the location would demand: spotlessly maintained showers and toilets, free WiFi, laundry, a small shop, and a coffee machine on site. The reception staff are the kind who hand you a Skye map and walk you through everything on arrival. There's also a bothy shelter for the tent contingent when the weather does what Skye weather does. Five minutes on foot gets you into Broadford's main street, where a Co-op and Asda Express handle the essentials, and the shellfish kiosk by the Claymore pub is worth knowing about.

As a base for the island this is hard to fault. The Fairy Pools, Portree, and the Skye Bridge are all day-trip territory. The site earns its reputation through owner care and quiet consistency rather than dramatic scenery from the pitches themselves, but the mountain views are real and the location is the thing. Adults only (no dogs accepted) keeps the atmosphere settled.
