Barrisdale Estate Campsite

The walk-in proves the point: Barrisdale is a wilderness campsite on Knoydart's south shore where the mountains do all the talking.

Barrisdale sits on the south shores of Loch Hourn, deep on the Knoydart Peninsula, ringed by Munros on three sides and with views out towards Skye on the fourth. Getting here is part of it: seven miles on foot from Kinloch-Hourn or a private boat across the loch. No road reaches Barrisdale, and that fact shapes everything about the experience.

The campsite is run by Barrisdale Estate and shares ground with an adjacent bothy. Facilities are deliberately minimal: toilets, and not much else. What you get instead is direct access to some of Scotland's most celebrated hill ground: Ladhar Bheinn (3, 346 ft) rises to the west, Beinn Sgritheall towers above Arnisdale to the north, and Luinne Bheinn and Meall Buidhe stand to the south. The Cape Wrath Trail passes through Glen Barrisdale, so the site draws both overnight walkers and those planning multi-day Munro rounds from a fixed base.

The setting is a Site of Special Scientific Interest for its rare flora and fauna. Pitches are tent-only; you bring what you need and plan accordingly. Inverie, the nearest settlement with a pub and basic supplies, is a further 10 miles by foot or accessible by ferry.
