Cuckoo Fen Campsite

A tent-only, off-grid field in the Cambridgeshire Fens where the RSPB reserve is five minutes' walk and the owner brings a wood-fired pizza oven on Friday evenings.

Cuckoo Fen is a quietly serious campsite: no mains electricity, composting toilets, solar-only lighting, and a field laid out so that long grass tufts naturally separate the pitches. The ethos is deliberate, not apologetic. You hear grasshoppers at dusk and, if you pitch on the right evening, smell woodsmoke from the pizza oven.

The location earns its keep. RSPB Ouse Fen is a five-minute walk, Fen Drayton Lakes a short stroll further, and the River Great Ouse is close enough for the owner Tim to offer canoe hire for a paddle at beginner-friendly pace. Cambridge is reachable by bicycle or bus, which means the flat Fenland lanes give you somewhere to go without needing to drive. On summer weekends a barista sometimes appears for fresh coffee and pastries.

Facilities are well looked-after beyond what the no-frills brief implies: the showers have hot water, the composting toilets are kept clean, and an honesty-box shop covers the essentials. Dogs are welcome on safe walks to the reserve. The site runs as a proper campsite run by owners who clearly care about the place.

Before you book

  • No mains electricity on site: solar lighting only, so come prepared for low-light evenings.
  • Canoe hire is a short drive to the river rather than waterside from the field itself.
An off-grid tent site in flat Fenland country that earns its reputation through owner care and a genuinely considered eco setup, with one of England's best RSPB reserves on its doorstep.

Why it made the cut

  • Tent-only field with a clear off-grid point of view: no mains electricity, composting toilets, solar lighting
  • RSPB Ouse Fen and Fen Drayton Lakes on the doorstep: proper birdwatching and wetland walking from the pitch
  • Owner Tim runs canoe hire and Friday pizza evenings: the kind of extras that signal someone who actually wants you to have a good time
  • Well-maintained throughout: clean facilities, blackberry bushes at the hedge line, long-grass pitch separation
