Penhale Caravan and Camping Park

A 400-acre working organic farm above St Austell Bay, where the view rolls from Daphne Du Maurier countryside down to the lights of Mevagissey.

Penhale sits just outside Fowey on a working organic beef farm, and the setting is the whole argument for coming. From the pitches you look out across gentle rolling farmland to the coast, with St Austell Bay opening up beyond and Mevagissey's lights visible on clear evenings. This is landscape that meant something to Daphne Du Maurier, and it's easy to see why.

Polkerris Beach is a mile away on foot, with two good options for a drink: The Rashleigh and Sam's on the Beach, both right on the sand. Fowey itself is a 50-minute walk through farmland and woods. The Eden Project and Lost Gardens of Heligan are both close enough for a day out without the drive feeling like a commitment.

The site takes tents, caravans, and motorhomes, with 41 electric pitches on grass. Facilities run to showers, toilets, a laundry, shop, and wifi. Dogs are welcome on a lead. Quiet hours from 11pm keep the site settled. The electric pitches are flat and enclosed; tent pitches on the slope can be uneven in places, worth bearing in mind if you're sleeping light.

Before you book

  • Non-electric tent pitches are on a slope, which can make sleeping and cooking awkward.
  • Push-button showers run short and require holding the button to extend them.
A genuine working farm with one of the better outlooks in Cornwall, earning its place through setting and location rather than facilities alone.

Why it made the cut

  • Sea views across St Austell Bay and the Mevagissey coastline, confirmed across multiple visitor accounts
  • One mile to Polkerris Beach with two good pub options on the sand
  • Working organic beef farm context gives the site real character beyond the pitch count
  • Fowey and the wider Daphne Du Maurier country reachable on foot from the site
