Cheglinch Camping (Wild Camping)

Three bell tents, a working dairy farm, and your own chickens to raid for eggs each morning on the North Devon countryside fringe.

Cheglinch Farm keeps it to three Lotus Belle bell tents on a four-acre working dairy farm outside West Down, near Ilfracombe. Maximum three families at once is the point: the place never tips into a site, stays a farm. Each tent gets its own shower, toilet, outdoor kitchen, and fire pit, so proximity to other guests is by choice rather than necessity.

Host Ella has stocked everything from cooking equipment to blankets and hot water bottles, and guests regularly note she has thought of details they hadn't. The farm itself is the entertainment for young children: morning egg collection from the chickens, calves to look at, guinea pigs, little tractors, and a willow den. There is also a covered play barn with toys and games, genuinely useful when the North Devon weather performs.

The North Devon surf beaches are a short drive: Woolacombe, Croyde, Putsborough, and Saunton all sit a few miles away by car. Ilfracombe is close for provisions and the harbour. From the farm, the views run across open Devon countryside with the sun dropping behind the hills in the evening.

Before you book

  • No dogs.
Cheglinch Farm earns its reputation through sheer attention to detail: private facilities per tent, a working farm that young children will talk about for months, and a host who has thought of the things you hadn't.

Why it made the cut

  • Three-tent maximum keeps it genuinely intimate rather than a small site in name only
  • Private shower, toilet, and kitchen per tent removes the usual glamping friction
  • Working dairy farm with chickens, calves, and guinea pigs is the kind of real farm contact most sites only gesture at
  • Ella's host presence is consistent and specifically praised across all guest accounts
