Cerrig-yr-Adar

A family-run coastal base on the quiet southern tip of Ynys Gybi, with Rhoscolyn beach on the doorstep and Snowdonia lighting up at sunset across the water.

Outdoor Alternative has been running at Rhoscolyn since 1985, and it shows in the best possible way: owners who know their ground, guests who return for a decade without thinking twice, and a rhythm that hasn't been smoothed into something generic. The site sits on the edge of the Anglesey AONB, and on clear evenings the mountains of Eryri catch the last of the sun from across the fields and sea.

Rhoscolyn beach is a short walk from the gate, and the Isle of Anglesey Coastal Path runs straight past. Swimmers, snorkellers, SUP paddlers, and kayakers all make good use of it. The site also has rock climbing and coasteering access nearby, which is why outdoor groups, mountaineering clubs, and school parties keep booking it year after year. Pitches take tents and caravans, and there is a yurt and a 6-berth static for those who want a roof. The bunkhouse makes the site genuinely versatile: a family in the yurt, a group of climbers in the bunks, and a couple in a tent can all be here at the same time without getting in each other's way.

Jacqui and the family run it with the kind of attention that produces clean facilities and home-cooked food worth writing a review about: chickpea curry with home-grown salad, breakfast baps in the morning. It is not a catering-led site, but when the kitchen is open the quality is real. Facilities include showers, toilets, laundry, and Wi-Fi, along with a playground for younger visitors.

Forty years of family ownership on a stretch of Anglesey coast that earns its reputation through the setting and the people running it, not through extras.
