Belan Bluebell Woods

A working sheep farm at 1, 300ft in the Cambrian Mountains where the dark-sky views and wood-fired pizza Friday are both genuinely special.

Pantmaenog Farm sits on a shelf of the Cambrian Mountains above Llanidloes, 2 miles from town, at an elevation where the sky does something remarkable at night. Belan Bluebell Woods is the camping arm of that farm: six meadow pitches alongside a shepherd's hut, two geo-domes, and a bell tent, each with its own fire pit and the mountain horizon as the backdrop. This is a recognised Dark Skies Wales area, and at 1, 300ft the Milky Way rewards anyone who stays up past the fire.

Suzi and Joe run the site with their family and have built everything thoughtfully from the ground up: a horsebox shower, compostable loos, an outdoor kitchen area with covered space for wet days, and a small on-site shop for forgotten essentials. Arriving on a Friday means a wood-fired pizza welcome. The geodomes come fitted with genuinely comfortable beds; reviews consistently single out the quality of sleep. The whole operation leans eco-conscious without making a performance of it.

Llanidloes is close enough for a morning bakery run. Further afield, the Elan Valley, the Red Kite Feeding Centre, and the Centre for Alternative Technology at Machynlleth are within range. Aberdovey and Borth beach are possible day trips. Public footpaths run directly from the property into the forests and mountains. This is mid-Wales done properly: remote enough to matter, connected enough not to be awkward.
