Oak & Ash & Thorn in the Cotswolds

120 acres of ancient Cotswolds woodland with named veteran trees, communal fires, and enough space to feel genuinely alone.

Oak and Ash and Thorn occupies Voltaire's Wood, a 120-acre block of ancient woodland between Stroud and Tetbury in the Cotswolds AONB. Four separate camping areas are scattered through the trees, each far enough apart that your nearest neighbours are a faint echo. The forest has a character beyond the generic: yew and chestnut groves, streams cutting through valleys, named veteran beeches including one the site calls The Witch. This is the kind of place where dawn arrives gradually, through canopy.

The setup is genuinely off-grid. Communal fire pits are the social spine; firewood and biodegradable loos are provided, but you bring everything else. On-site steward Jack (and hosts Jac and Joy when around) is there for the practical stuff, including lugging gear to pitches that vehicles can't reach. The site runs weekends from May to October, and takes small groups through to whole-site stag and hen bookings. A coppicing session with the hosts is apparently an option if you want to contribute something back.

The Weighbridge Inn is a short walk through the trees at the bottom of the wood, which solves the evening meal question neatly. For the right kind of guest, this is the rare Cotswolds campsite where the woods, not the village, are the point.

Before you book

  • Access to camping areas requires 4x4 or similar; steward can help shuttle gear if needed.
  • Booking and deposit process can be unclear: worth confirming firewood, water, and shelter arrangements before arrival.
Proper wild camping in ancient Cotswolds woodland, with enough scale to feel like wilderness and enough host presence to feel safe. The trees do the heavy lifting.
