Low Wray Campsite

National Trust lakeside camping in the Lake District, with woodland pitches, some right on Windermere's shore and Wray Castle on the doorstep.

Low Wray sits on the western shore of Windermere with 129 pitches scattered through meadow and woodland, some close enough to the water that you can hear the lake from your tent. The National Trust manages it with quiet competence: the site is well-kept without feeling institutional, and the staff have a reputation for going well out of their way for guests.

The forested layout is the thing that sets it apart from a standard lakeshore campsite. Pitches are distributed through the trees rather than arranged in rows, which gives a sense of seclusion even at a site of this size. Wray Castle sits immediately adjacent, and five waymarked trails start within a couple of kilometres, taking in Skellghyll Woods, Grizedale Forest, and paths around to Hawkshead. An on-site pizza van operates in season, cooking to order.

The site takes tents, campervans, motorhomes, and hardstanding tourers alongside glamping pods and safari tents, with electric hookups available throughout. Dogs are welcome. A small shop covers basics. For exploring the wider Lakes, Ambleside is reachable by ferry in season, and there are bus connections from the top of the lane.

Before you book

  • The Windermere ferry from the site does not run in winter; Ambleside is accessible by bus from the top of the lane.
  • The on-site shop stocks essentials only; stock up before arrival if you plan a longer stay without driving out.
One of the Lake District's most straightforwardly good campsites: direct Windermere access, woodland pitches with proper seclusion, and National Trust stewardship that keeps it honest.

Why it made the cut

  • Some pitches sit directly on the Windermere shoreline
  • Forested layout breaks 129 pitches into distinct, secluded pockets
  • Wray Castle and five waymarked trails within easy reach of the site gate
  • On-site pizza in season; staff warmth is a recurring theme across reviews
