Llanthony Priory

Gloriously basic camping in the shadow of an 11th century priory, pitched in a circular clearing under the Black Mountains in the Vale of Ewyas for a few pounds a night

When you arrive in the Vale of Ewyas you will begin to understand the motive that led to the establishment of Llanthony Priory in 1100 by Benedictine monks. Fast forward to the 21st century and the area is worshipped by walkers, ramblers and those seeking solitude. But whatever your denomination you will feel the magic in the valley, which somewhat explains the dedication to build a priory in such an isolated spot. Court Farm campsite sits in a large circular clearing under the Black Mountains and allows you to camp an honest stone's throw from the ruins. The site is group friendly and rarely full. If there is nobody around when you arrive, simply pitch your tent and somebody will amble by in the morning to take your money, and at just a few pounds a night it is about as cheap as camping gets.

But in contrast to the priory's ruined majesty, Court Farm campsite is as gloriously basic as campsites come. There are no showers and no toilets on the site itself, just a well used public toilet in the Priory car park a short walk away, plus a water tap, and, well, that's about it. Log fires are not allowed, though BBQ coals are fine. Don't let any of this put you off; despite it the site is beautiful, with the hills soaring above it only enhanced by a lack of modern fripperies such as showers.

After a hard day's walking you may want a good wash, but what you really need is a drink, and vitally there are a couple of good options within walking distance, including the cellar bar beside the abbey and a nearby pub serving fresh pizzas. As you stumble out into the night after a few local ales you'll be presented with the ruins, hopefully lit by the moon, and wander the few yards back to your tent, content and spiritualised both physically and metaphorically.
